The third day saw intense match-ups between the contenders. RNG fought and defeated the Isurus and Istanbul Wildcats, which led to both teams being kicked out of play-ins knockout contention. LPL all maintained a strong presence, while LCK remained undefeated 4–0.

Mega Bank Beyond Gaming Vs Fnatic (Group A)
The tiebreaker came with a strong 3-1 score from second seed FNC of Southeast Asia at the top of the final day of the play-in. BYG did their best to build up their torpedo comp with the work of Kaisa, Sejuani, and Silas, but the game was nowhere near as close as one would expect. Razor’s Graves took the offensive control of the forest and stole the camps in the very early game. FNC made up for a slight lull in the game and won a midgame clash for the Rift Herald and a hard top lane push that decided the game. The stellar teamplay by the PSC representatives could not keep pace with the individual powerhouses of Fnatic. FNC’s complete control over the entire map kept its lead throughout the game. Despite BYG Husha’s well-played Baron steal, no planned effort by the team was able to break Fnatic’s tidal wave that propelled the fan to a very impressive victory.

Loud vs Chief Esports (Group A)
The Chiefs’ valiant effort to break their losing streak has garnered 240,000 viewers one of the most action-packed shows of Worlds 2022. First Blood by LLL on the top lane helped Robo’s Atrox start scaling. Croc’s Head Jungle secures Ganx and an uncontested Rift Herald after killing the first level 6. Loud’s incessant team engagements gave the Chiefs (and the shouters) no room to breathe, and the CBLOL leaders crushed the opposition under their Tier 2 turrets before the Baron even got on the map. The stakes were high, and CHF fought tooth and nail against LLL’s game-ending lead. But despite Topoon and Tass leading their team in opportunistic 4v2s, Loud earned his name by earning thunderous applause.

Detonation FM vs Evil Geniuses (Group A)
The DFM’s ban on Azir and Kaisa removed EG’s two most viable choices for hard hitters, and it still proved to be a close match. In an early game clash at Top River, EG’s raw power turned up against the DFM’s good position, which set the pace for the entire game. The Japanese team recognized Eiji’s snowball abilities and decided to avoid risky actions before midgame. And it paid off tremendously. DFM played it safe throughout the midgame and achieved a similar kill score, taking the gold lead. LJL prevented any of his turrets from falling after 30 minutes of gameplay, while EG used every opportunity to start team fights. The entire game back and forth was constantly strategic, with DFM effectively taking advantage of EG’s confidence to be knocked out every time.

Teams: DFM 1 – 0 EG
Time: 40:13
Kills: 18 – 14
Turret: 7 – 1
Gold: 72.8k – 67.2k
Dragons: 3 – 2

Istanbul Wildcats vs Isurus (Group B)
The Wildcats and Isurus competed for their first win in their final match for Worlds 2022. With smart plays seen from Gnell’s Wukong, Isurus took the first dragon after the Wildcats took the Rift Herald and won a clash. The TCL team was slippery during teamfights, and narrowly escaped a full wipe early game. The ferret’s maokai with their ultimate ability had perfect zoning and ripped apart strong opponents. But with every pick of the wildcats, Isurus gathered his strength with his gold lead and came back stronger. With one clash after another, ADD’s Atrox and Sia’s Silas scattered the enemy team in every fight, giving ISG a bad win as both teams crashed out of the tournament.

DRX vs Mad Lions (Group A)
MAD faced the most formidable team of Worlds 2022 in a powerful display of resistance that could have gone either way. MAD Armat deftly chose the Mordekaiser top to help him counter Beryl’s Yumi. Deft’s Sivir brought Thunder into the bottom lane, while Niskey handled midgame ganks from several DRX members. It remained a close match until MAD took a 1-4 lead and 22 minutes to Baron thanks to Morde’s monstrous View + Sunfire build. The excitement was evident among Lions fans, but a strong and coordinated team fight against the enemy on the top lane dealt a devastating blow to MAD’s Tier 2 tower. This ruined the EU team’s rhythm, and gave the undefeated challengers ample window to take the inhibitors.

Royal Never Give Up vs Saigon Buffalo (Group B)
RNG’s team-oriented composition earned them their fourth play-in win. The LPL representative scored 2 goals before the 5 minute mark and took control of the map. He made the first Rift Herald and the first Drake almost unopposed. This early Power Spike Royal was able to match the lethal power difference of the SGB Shogun, but even he found it difficult to carry the SGB during every clash. The Vietnamese 2nd seed was able to turn up teamfights more efficiently as their quick and loose playmaking got them through the midgame. But after more turrets fell in the RNG, he scrambled to defend against the Baron-buffed final wave.
-
Teams: RNG 1 – 0 SGB
Time: 32:59
Kills: 9 – 9
Turret: 10 – 2
Gold: 63.5k – 53.4k
Dragons: 3 – 2
Barons: 1 – 0
Evil Geniuses Vs Detonation FM (Group B)
In their rematch, Evil Geniuses went up against first seed DFM of Japan. Eiji’s macroplay on the bottom and top lane saw Vulcan’s thrash shine, and Kaori’s control down the middle lane gave the team an uncontested rule over Drake. The Akali-Aphelios-Atrox comp scaled strongly in contrast to the DFM as the game went on. A brilliant outplay by Jojopyune and the rest of the NA Group in a midgame clash saw Evil Geniuses win Gold and Tower Advantage, and the DFM could do nothing but slowly lose.

Teams: EG 1 – 0 DFM
Time: 28:32
Kills: 22 – 8
Turret: 9 – 3
Gold: 57.2k – 47.4k
Dragons: 3 – 1
