This was February, 1996. A Coke-filled, overweight 13-year-old I was reading about at CES in issue 148 of CVG and salivating at the ultra-positive review of Sonic 3. CVG gave some high scores, but 94 was pretty exciting for a SEGA guy like me. What would be my life as a sports journalist, I thought to myself. Not high on narcotics, just full of hope that only a child can achieve. I will make this dream come true and live like a king, never to buy video games again.
And then, shouting from the tiny speaker in my Philips radio alarm clock, came a song, unknown to me at the time, predicting my future. Irony, by Alanis Morissette.
traffic jam when you’re already late
The “No Smoking” Sign on Your Cigarette Brakes
It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It’s a game journal, yeah, and then turning them into a radio show
And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
a little too ironic, and yes I really think
18 years later, and here we are. The prophecy is fulfilled by looking for the hit. it is VG247 Best Games Ever PodcastEpisode 8: The best game that magazines love but most people think is a little goofy.

Please let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening to it, go back to listen to previous episodes. You can listen to them in any order you like as there is no rhyme or reason to the subjects. If you have suggestions for themes, we’d love to hear them – but please keep in mind that I’ll have to write a few award-winning-worthy novels for each.
“What is VG247’s best sports podcast ever?” You ask, hopefully this doesn’t trigger another ill-conceived nostalgic Segway. Well, imagine you’re watching a TV panel show from the early 200s. One of the good guys. But the TV is broken so there is only audio, and all the famous panelists were sick so they had to bring down some rando from the audience. TV networks also began to care about video games, so dedicated an entire show to it, rather than just one person referencing Mario as if he were to be talked about with the same disdain as Fred West. It’s also only about 30 minutes long, so if you don’t like it you’ll be over it in no time (side note: this episode is 40 minutes long because the sheriff stopped about a time loop).
We’ve got some details on the content of the show below (if you don’t want to hear or get a refresher, make an amazing, thought-provoking post before moving on to the comments but want to know which games we’ve picked) So if you want to avoid spoilers, don’t scroll through this fan-made creation of what looks like Chris Bratt in The Sims 4 (VG247’s Support Friends, People Make Games, on Patreon).
The best games that magazines love but most people think are a little nuff
This is the subject of episode eight of VG247’s Best Games Ever podcast. Here’s who chose what.
Tom – Jacobs 6 (or just any Jacobs game)
Okay, listen before you go. I’m here to talk to people, to be the clown as opposed to the group. So I picked a game from a franchise I know very well that people love, but Jacobs is a game series that magazines love, yet I really don’t get. Ok? It’s on me, but I’m projecting on others.
alex – quantum break
Hello, I’m Alex, of course Tom isn’t writing words for me because I’m not working today. I apologize for choosing Quantum Break, the excellent 8/10 sci-fi action banger, as my game for this week. I’ve come to understand, ever since this podcast was recorded, that Quantum Break is an amazing game that most people enjoy. It is destined to go down in history as one of the greats of the genre.
Sheriff – Deathloop
Everyone in the game media has been raving about it ever since Deathloop came out. When I finally sat down to play it late last year, I realized I don’t see what everyone else is tempting! Deathloop has always been pitched, and advertised, as a time loop game. That’s what I went hoping for. When I started playing I was again in disbelief and found it to be no god demon time loop game!
Tell us which sport would you choose and if you think Tom’s treatment is getting out of hand now? If you like the podcast, please subscribe and review how great it is, and tell all your friends. Make a tweet about it, post on Facebook, call in local radio shows and say nothing but podcast page URLs.
Come back in a week or so for another episode of VG247’s Best Games Ever podcast.
