Sometimes games are like anyone else: they evolve over time and end up exploring new horizons, even if it means breaking the codes of the saga in which they are part. The proof with these five titles with a much darker atmosphere than their predecessors.
#1 Grand Theft Auto IV
It’s a fact, the GTAs are far from being examples of levity as violence and obscenities are omnipresent there. However, Rockstar often accentuates the colorful, second-degree and satirical side of games to make everything a little less dark. Except for GTA IV, which adopts a much more serious tone and a duller colorimetry than usual. What offer a very dark atmosphere to the adventures of Nico Bellic.
#2 Jack II: Outlaw
Between Crash Bandicoot and the first Jak & Daxter, Naughty Dog got us used to diving into fun, colorful and humorous worlds. So when Jak II came out, everyone was surprised by the much darker and more violent tone adopted for this opus, which is far from having won unanimous support.. Since then, with a license like The Last of Us to its credit, the studio has come a long way…
#3 The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

In general, Nintendo’s productions are known for their light and good-natured atmosphere reminiscent of cartoons. But with The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and its apocalypse story providing a permanent sense of threat, we are far from finding the publisher’s usual levity.. This is what makes this opus so special in the eyes of the fans, many of whom have greatly appreciated it.
#4 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Even survival horror can get darker from episode to episode. While the first games were known for their horrific atmosphere, Capcom gradually slipped into action over the episodes. Until Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which ultimately became the most dark, violent and visceral installment of the entire franchise.. A return to basics widely welcomed by players and critics.
#5 Shadow the Hedgehog

With Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega has undeniably had many hours of glory. It must be said that the beautiful colorful universe of the blue hedgehog has something to seduce. The same can’t be said for Shadow the Hedgehog, which deeply disappointed players by throwing us into a darker and more violent world.. Like what, sometimes, it is better to stay on its solid foundations rather than wanting to break the codes.
