It’s National Video Game Day and I decided to celebrate it by remembering the glory days of Atari. I used to love Atari and, believe it or not, still have two Atari game consoles and they both work!
I recently took them out of storage and reminisced about all the games I have that I used to play for hours. to keep track!
Well, to celebrate National Video Game Day and really honor the legend of Atari, I decided to make a list of my favorite Atari games of all time. I’m calling her list Ten Best Atari Games of All Time And, yes, I realize this is completely subjective.
However, take a look at ten of my favorites and see how many of you have made my list. If I’ve left any of your favorites off the list, chime in and let me know!
In the meantime, enjoy this walk down joystick lane!
#10- Kaboom!
My friend Brian and I used to play Kaboom! throughout. They had an Atari before I did and it was one of those games they had. The design and concept was ridiculously simple, but Kaboom! It was nerve-wracking and completely addictive.
#9- Okay!
I loved playing Oink! It was a clever take on the legendary battle between the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. It was a classic fairy tale gone horribly wrong. If your little pig got caught in the wolf’s bad breath, that little pig was never going to go home again.
#8- Space Invaders
Truly one of the classic Atari games. A lot of Atari games were set in outer space, but Space Invaders really captured the threat of alien invasion. I had this game on my Atari 2600 and I also had a hand-held version of it. Space Invaders was one of those video games that really ruled the early 1980s.
#7- Spiderman
First Atari game I ever bought with my own money. I used to mow my aunt’s yard and she paid me $7 every time I did. It took four weeks to save up to buy Spiderman. I clearly remember the day I got it. I bought it at the Osco Drugs location inside the Town Square Mall in Owensboro. The graphics on the game were terrible, but that didn’t matter. I had to pretend to be Spiderman and face the Green Goblin whenever I wanted to. And, I played this game a lot.
#6- MS. pac-man
While Pac-Man was certainly the pioneer, I think we can all agree that Ms. was a better model and sport. Ms. Pac-Man did everything better than Pac-Man – graphics, soundtrack, challenge. I loved this game.
#5- Cosmic Ark
For my money, the best space-themed Atari game. Heck, my mom even loved playing Cosmic Arc. It was simple in design and execution, but the game put your nerves, senses and stability to a relentless and pulse-pounding test.
#4- Jungle Hunt
Very reminiscent of another game that I’ll mention in a moment, Jungle Hunt was escapism at its best. It literally pushes you into the middle of the jungle to swing on vines and swim with crocodiles.
#3- Donkey Kong
I loved Donkey Kong and could play this game (and all its levels) for hours. It’s a classic 80s isn’t it? A giant “Kong”, a young woman in distress and a hero literally leaps to her rescue.
#2- Frog
As if telling you to “look both ways” wasn’t enough to teach you how to cross the road properly, Frogger continued. If you don’t look either way in this game, your frog will be flattened by cars or eaten by alligators.
#1- Damage
My all-time favorite Atari game- hands down, no contest. A full blast of an adventure that pushes you deep into the woods in search of alligators, scorpions and pit treasures that will push you into a twisted-tunneled underworld that looked like the mouth of madness. However, if you can complete the challenges, you will be rewarded with gold and silver bars!
What was your favorite Atari game of all time?
