much awaited Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves The trailer is finally here after debuting at San Diego Comic-Con and, after years of very low expectations, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. The Entertainment One team at Paramount Pictures and Hasbro has brought an action-packed heist film to life with a star-studded cast. And that’s what makes D&D so much fun – fighting monsters with your friends at the kitchen table.
The trailer is simply fantastic at introducing our characters and placing the bets. The core of the party, a bard (Chris Pine) and a barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez). A cast of adventurers including a skilled warrior (Reggae-Jean Page), a powerful mage (Justice Smith), and a shape-shifting druid (Sophia Lillis, who shared that she’s involved in D&D through the actual game). Gather rag-tag circles. Podcasts like Critical Role). Then they proceed to spread the mess.
The crap they waste? A convoy of only D&D’s most recognizable monsters. Dragons are abundant, as well as a fierce displacer animal. The mimic, disguised as a treasure chest, cracks open its teeth before sticking out with its sticky tongue. At one point Lillis’s character transforms into an owl, one of the franchise’s most iconic monsters, which goes back to the first edition—and the bag of plastic “chinasaurs” that either Dave Arneson or Gary Gygax bought from a local drugstore. picked up at the shop. In Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in the 1970s. There’s also a bit where our hero purposefully leaps inside a gelatinous cube.
And yes, that’s a huge fan service. But that fan service is being used in a very creative way. The film’s set-piece battles feel less like deleted scenes game of Thrones And much more like what happens at game night on kitchen tables all over the world. Revealing the action I don’t see Guardians of the Galaxy stepping up to the plate, though Banquet is clearly top notch. Instead, I look to all the friends and family I’ve played tabletop RPGs with over the years, trying – and sometimes failing – at the roll of the dice.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves It is set to premiere in theaters in March 2023.
