Marjorie A. Martell, age 93, died on Saturday, August 27, 2022 in Vancouver, WA. She was born in Walla Walla, WA to Rocky and Madeline Calabrese. She was the third generation of her family in Walla Walla – her maternal grandparents (Mele and Curcio) immigrated to Walla Walla from Calabria, IT and her father Bari, IT.
In Walla Walla, Marjorie graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing, class of 1950. She helped give birth to several children as a maternity nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, until she caught the eye of a beautiful Whitman student, Urgel. Martel. They got married in 1952 and raised 4 children. They will have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this fall. Marjorie became a receptionist at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Vancouver—a service to which she was devoted for nearly 5 decades. Church calls went after hours to her home for many years where she compassionately helped all those in need. Because of his deep faith he served others for many years: to five parish priests; Starting and running church gift giving for children; as a board member of St. Vincent de Paul; And countless hours support St. Joseph’s Catholic School and the Bravo Vancouver Concert Series. Marjorie had a special gift of knowing how to console those passing and their families and often helped them through the process. On his birthday his kitchen was filled with flowers and chocolates, which appreciated his help and knew his weakness for chocolate.
Marjorie died before her parents and her beloved sister, Mary. She is survived by her husband Urgel, sons David, Douglas, Mark (Karen) and daughter Paula (Scott), grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She rarely missed her football, softball and tennis games. Her family is comforted by the realization that an angel has earned her wings. We’re likely to see her next when we get to St. Peter’s Gate, where we expect her to happily check the spelling of names on her lists.
On Thursday, September 8, a rosary at 10 a.m. and Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Vancouver. Monuments can be erected in the name of Marjorie to St. Vincent de Paul (svdpvancouverusa.org). The Martel family would like to thank all the staff at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center as well as their home caregivers for their loving care.
