At Mobile World Congress, Verizon announced partnerships with Qualcomm and Razer. Now Razer is planning to release a new handheld console specially designed for cloud gaming and streaming.
The Razer Edge 5G is being built on the Snapdragon G3 Gen 1, which is meant to take advantage of Verizon’s 5G Ultrawideband. While no specific hardware details were revealed at the show, we got a brief first look at the handheld courtesy of Twitter user GLKcreative (opens in new tab).
Verizon’s press release says it’s an Android device that will “give you access to your favorite games, whether they’re downloaded to play locally, streamed from your console, or accessed directly from the cloud.” have been done.” If that’s true, it’s something that even the versatile Steam Deck (opens in a new tab) can’t do.
Last week, Logitech launched its G Cloud gaming console (opens in new tab) targeted specifically for cloud gaming via streaming apps such as GeForce Now, Steam Remote Play, and Xbox Cloud Gaming over WiFi. The Edge 5G looks like it’ll do a little more than that, allowing you to stream games over both WiFi and 5G.

More ways to play your games on the go is never a bad thing. But there’s still a lot we don’t know about Edge 5G, such as price, storage capacity, and cost. More importantly, I’m curious if you’ll be able to access various gaming storefronts and libraries like the Epic Games Store, Steam or Xbox Game Pass.
For example, Logitech G Cloud only lets you download games from the Google Play store and doesn’t let you download your PC game library locally. If Edge 5G lets you do that, it will become a serious rival to not only the G Cloud but also the Steam deck.
Razer will reveal more details about the Edge 5G at RazerCon (opens in new tab) on October 15th.
