The PS5 shortage could end as early as next year. Sony would have very high production targets for its console, which would be available in a version with a detachable disc drive.
Whereas sony recently increased the ps5 pricethe firm would prepare a whole new model of his latest console. Its particularity: it would be equipped with a removable disk drive, connected via a USB-C port on the back of the console. The release would take place around September 2023, in the context of a massive acceleration of the production of the machine. At least that’s what the figures reported by journalist Tom Henderson of the Insider Gaming site suggest.
The end of the PS5 shortage in 2023?
According to Henderson, Sony plans to produce 18.5 million copies of the new PS5 with detachable disc drive between April 2023 and March 2024 (which corresponds to fiscal year 2023). To this would be added 12 million units of the models currently available on the market, or a total of about 30 million!
A goal that seems very ambitious. Recall that between its release in November 2020 and June 2022, the PS5 sold 21.7 million copies in total. And for the current fiscal year (April 2022 to March 2023), Sony plans to distribute 18 million in total. If the figures reported by Henderson are correct, then there would be many more PS5s on the market in 2023 compared to this year.
A lot of people missed this, but Sony is aiming to produce over 30 million PS5’s in FY23.
Crazy numbers.

All this obviously remains to be confirmed. Sony has not yet formalized the arrival of this new model with removable disk drive. The firm is also preparing the launch of PSVR 2 for the beginning of 2022, which would be produced at two million units when it is released.
