What is PlayStation Stars and how does it work?
With PlayStation Stars, you earn rewards by completing various missions and activities. Some missions are easy enough to complete, such as Sony’s “monthly check-in” campaign, which requires you to play any number of games just to get the reward. Other campaigns will challenge you to earn specific trophies, such as being one of the first players in your region to receive a platinum AAA title.
Campaigns are updated regularly, and gamers can check the PlayStation app to see when new ones launch. The more missions you complete, the faster you will level up. Leveling up earns you more rewards and digital collectibles. more on them later.
The PlayStation Stars program is currently exclusive to the PlayStation app. Still, Sony says they’re working on expanding the service to consoles in the future, which means you’ll likely have a dedicated app on your PS5 or PS4.

Do you need PlayStation Plus to join PlayStation Stars?
While you will earn some benefits for being a member of PlayStation Plus, joining PlayStation Stars does not require a PlayStation Plus membership.
What rewards do PlayStation Stars offer?
There are two main types of rewards – loyalty points and digital collectibles. Points can be earned by purchasing games from the PlayStation Store. Points can then be redeemed in a catalog that includes PSN Wallet funds, exclusive digital collectibles, and select PlayStation Store products. Points earned when you buy or pre-order a game are about four percent back on your purchase.
Digital collectibles are small, 3D models of things PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of iconic characters from games and older devices and consoles from the history of Sony’s gaming products. It is kind of like NFTs, but they cannot be traded or sold, so they are only for appreciation. There will be new collectibles to earn regularly, ultra-rare collectibles to try, or spontaneous surprises to collect.
Digital collectibles you own or earn can be arranged on the display case within the PlayStation app. You can also set up a display case for other players to see if you want to show off your collection.
In addition, PlayStation Stars’ leveling system is heavily focused on digital collectibles. With each level reached, you’ll earn a commemorative digital collectible. Check out the list of leveled levels and what they unlock below:
- Tier 1 Milestones — Join the program and start completing missions
- Tier 1 Benefit — Digital collectibles through completing campaigns, a festive collectible
- Tier 2 Milestones — Bought a full game from the PlayStation Store and earned an unusual trophy
- Tier 2 Benefits – Access to Level 2 Celebration collectibles and all Level 1 collectibles.
- Tier 3 Milestones — Bought two full games from the PlayStation Store and earned 32 unusual trophies
- Tier 3 Benefits — Level 3 Celebration Collectibles and Birthday Collectibles
- Tier 4 Milestones — Purchased four full games from the PlayStation Store and earned 128 unusual trophies
- Tier 4 Benefits — Celebration Collectibles, All Level 1-3 Collectibles, and “Chat Priority Routing.”
A controversial aspect of this leveling system is that players will not have access to “chat priority routing” until they reach level four. While it makes sense to encourage gamers to earn rewards and collectibles by playing games so they can buy and play more games, dangling superior customer service behind a paywall isn’t consumer-friendly.
