The new PS Plus recently arrived on PlayStation 5 with its emulation bundle, but it’s far from perfect for PS3 games which still cause problems.
The new PS Plus has been in place since June 23 in Europe on PlayStation 5, but it’s frankly a disappointment when it comes to emulation, especially for PS3 games. It is true that this console has historically always posed problems for everyone because of its too singular design. In 2022, Sony is still not done with this era, since the PS3 games available in the new PS Plus are not available in emulation, but only in streaming. The problem with streaming is that not only does it require a good internet connection, but more importantly, it severely limits the performance of the game. However, there are signs that Sony will try to fix the problem.
Sony wants the PlayStation 5 to be able to emulate PS3 games
A job offer posted by Sony indicates that they want to recruit a software engineer who will work exclusively on the issue of emulation. The offer does not speak explicitly of the PS3, but everyone knows that there is a big project to do at this level. Despite the historical problems of the PS3, Sony therefore intends to eventually offer emulation for games from this console. It’s still the least you can do when amateur solutions like the RPCS3 emulator have been around for years, and run lots of big PS3 games much better than on the real console.
4K 60 FPS in emulation for PS3 games has been possible for years, and the PS5 can largely do it on paper, but it is true that it requires a lot of work. As Sony hasn’t been very reactive on the subject of emulation, compared to Microsoft, they are currently paying for their delay a little, but we can salute the fact that they finally want to get serious about it if we so believes this recent job offer. Emulation is serious business, and it will become more and more important over the years. So let’s hope that Sony manages to run PS3 games with dignity on PS5, we wish them good luck.
