The Nintendo Wii Shop has made a great comeback after months of being offline. The Wii Shop is one of the most important innovations for Nintendo. Before the Wii, previous Nintendo consoles didn’t have much of an online component and certainly nothing like an online store for players to use. The Wii Shop was unfortunately destroyed in 2019, ensuring that no one could buy a game from it, but it remained active so that players could continue to download the games they had previously purchased. With that said, the app has been down on the Wii for “maintenance” for months, but there’s no real explanation as to what that maintenance was and if or when it will return.
Well, with zero notice, Nintendo revived the Wii Shop earlier this week. GameXPlane noted the store’s return, delighting fans to return to the games they’ve purchased. Of course, fans are still unable to purchase the game, so it’s purely a tool for those who already own their titles. Although many Wii games have made their way to the Wii U or Nintendo Switch, there are plenty of games that are only available through the Wii, including some Virtual Console games. With that said, fans can’t hold their breath on being able to accessorize these forever. Nintendo has said that the Wii Store will one day disappear entirely, taking with it all downloaded games. While this may be frustrating, it is an imperative for these types of digital stores to maintain servers and licenses for some of the players who still access minority players.
Even so, we can still appreciate the Wii Shop and bask in its glory until Nintendo officially decides to kill it once and for all. Wii Shop music has become popular with the Internet, making its way to countless videos and parodies over the years. It is sure to survive long after its legacy is truly gone.
