Wizards of the Coast released Spelljammer: Adventures in Space On Tuesday, a three-volume love letter to the wacky setting of Dungeons & Dragons. It also released a grand surprise for fans – a full-length album called spelljamsFree to stream and download. We’ve repeated it here for a full 24 hours, and every track of it is absolutely bad.
Story architect Chris Perkins tapped The Decemberists’ lead guitarist Chris Funk to curate the album. Along with other members of the expedition’s development team, he spent time with each artist to discuss their work and how they might approach things like wildspace, space clowns, space vampires, and space whales.
“I have a meeting with everyone,” said Chris Lindsay, product marketing manager for Wizards. “We really wanted to play in a spelljammer game, and it was a really transformative experience for each of the cast. It didn’t matter if they were already huge D&D fans or they absolutely loved the game. were new […] You can almost see with some of them – like they were starting to pick out the aspects of the game they loved – they’d start to piece together their songs right there, and then they’d be super excited to hang out. Call so they can go away and make their own music. ,
Even if you don’t pick up or run campaigns, there’s something great here for everyone who loves music. The album opens with a moody synth track from Magic Sword, transitioning to a theremin-and-thrash-metal song by Osage, before performing a William Shatner impression in “Space Is a Place” by Reggie Watts channels David Hasselhoff.
The album will also be available in a vinyl collectors edition. The Triple Gatefold LP Dungeon Masters will double as a screen. (We’ve made an official inquiry about vinyl decals for your van.) The full track list is below.
