Nintendo has released a new trailer for Super Mario Bros. Movie Thursday as part of Direct. In it, we finally get to hear what Chris Pratt’s Mario voice sounds like, but the trailer also had a cameo from a relatively unknown set of characters. In the beginning, it shows Bowser and his Koopa army going up against a kingdom of penguins. The birds put up a good fight by throwing snowballs, but this is no match for Bowser’s flames. The inclusion of penguins comes as a surprise, mainly because they aren’t the most central Mario characters in previous games. However, they are a regular fixture in the franchise series so we decided to explain what the deal is with Penguin.
According to the Mario Wiki entry, the penguins in the Mario series appear as part of Mario in early 1984. pinball Play. However, the first major appearance, and one a fan is most likely to remember super mario 64, Cool, a mountain themed world called Cool Mountain, has a set of levels that feature penguins prominently.
You have interacted with monstrously large bipedal birds on many levels in the world. In “Big Penguin Race”, you have to race against a slide under the ice to get a star. In “Lil’ Penguin Lost”, Mario is tasked with helping a penguin mom retrieve her lost penguin baby. In the level, you have to navigate a slippery and treacherous terrain while catching a crying penguin. (The cries of baby penguins are still on my mind and people regularly make fun of penguins falling off a cliff.)
since 64Mario games regularly include penguins in their worlds. Fans of the Mario Party series may remember rounding them up as part of the mini game super mario party or you can recognize them by the slippery icebergs of Super Mario OdysseyS Snow Kingdom. Penguin has featured several Mario games, making them a long-running addition to the series.
Of course there are many lore questions left for our imagination. We still don’t know why penguins have a beef with Bowser and we don’t know how they came to rule and dominate their kingdom, so we’ll have to wait on the details. But now at least the main cast of the franchise gets their moment center stage by appearing in the film. (Even if it’s because getting beaten up by Bowser.)
