PlayStation 5 is a little bit into its life now, but some players are still looking forward to PS VR2! This will be the next-generation of Sony’s virtual reality headset. Hopefully, this should be a good step up from the now fairly old original headset.
PS VR2 is launching a bit after the main console. However, its release date is fast approaching, and announcements of more details are coming thick and fast. We know a lot about the specs, improvements and new features coming to the next-gen device. This is everything we know so far about the PS VR2.
Everything we know about PS VR2
see-through view
One of the most impressive new features coming to PlayStation VR2 is the see-through view. It’s a new feature that should really help get around one of the biggest problems with playing with VR headsets to date.
This is going to allow you to look at the PlayStation VR’s viewscreen to really see your surroundings. It would be helpful to look down and see where the new Sense controllers are without actually removing the entire headset. You can use this feature to quickly check your surroundings and reduce the distractions that come with the headset.
In terms of how it’s actually being implemented, it’s not some successful screen that could be transparent. Instead the PS VR2’s front-facing camera is going to be able to show you a live feed of the scene in front of you. This is a creative way around this issue. However, you cannot record this scene with it turned on.
You can access this feature via Control Enter to quickly switch to the real world view.
PS VR2 Broadcast
A new feature for this VR device is going to allow recording of your surroundings while you play. You will be able to film yourself and yourself and the play area when you are in the middle of the game. This is going to be a huge help for anyone who uses a headset for streaming.
customizable play area
The PS VR 2 is getting more usable and adaptable to less-than-perfect play areas. The old PS VR had the problem of being bothered by the interference of things in your room over and over again. The new cameras and Sense controllers for the PS VR 2 will map out your room to cut down on this.
These sensors will scan your surroundings and turn your play area into a safe space. It’s impressive and it’s really going to make the PS VR 2 a lot easier to play. You will be warned if you are approaching the limits of a safe play area. Since you can change the playing area this time around, it’s very easy to get comfortable with the PS VR2 gameplay.
Glasses and VR Mode
We recently got more news about the specs and the VR mode of the PS VR2. This is how you use the headset for the actual VR content. It will be operated with 360-degree view. Content is being displayed in full 4,000×2040 HDR video format. There will be a 2000×2040 screen for this in each eye. These screens will also have a 90Hz/120Hz frame rate. It’s a nice improvement over the standard display in-game.
The original PSVR has a resolution of 960×1080 per eye. The new one is quite a jump with almost a 4x increase in the MP of the screen. This is a great improvement.
In terms of other specs, the headset will feature better eye tracking, scaling resolution, and a 4K HDR OLED screen. The headset is also supposed to support haptic feedback like DualSense. The headset will also be compatible with 3D Audio, thanks to a major improvement in how the headset handles.
cinematic mode
Cinematic Mode is one of the most fun aspects of PS VR2. It’s a unique sight for playing non-VR content. It lets you play non-VR content over an epic area using the headset.
You are playing game here on virtual cinema screen. This time there is an improvement in the display of this mode. You are displaying it as 1920×1080 resolution. It will also play at 24/60Hz with a 120Hz frame rate for some content. This is another major improvement over the original.
PS VR2 release date
The release date of PS VR 2 is still a much talked about topic and we still don’t have a concrete release window for the console. The main rumor for the launch is that it should be expected to reach the shelves in 2023. However, details of the console have expanded in recent months. Some fans can still expect a 2022 launch, but 2023 certainly looks like a safe bet right now.
PS VR2 Price
The PS VR2 is going to have a better set of technical specifications, which brings to the fore the delicate topic of price. PS VR isn’t the only VR headset in the market and we can probably expect more competitive pricing this time around.
It is likely that the PS VR2 will cost less than the console this time around. Many people are expecting a price tag of just under $400. That would put it in the sweet spot very close to the more high-end Oculus Rift models, but above some of the cheaper Oculus headsets. It’s a good middle ground for new equipment.
controllers
PSVR may be playable with a standard controller, but in the past, Sony’s Move controllers were more specialist and made specifically for this device. With all the improvements in DualSense, we can expect a boost for the PS VR2’s controllers this time around too. The new controllers for the system are shown in a bit.
The new PS VR2 controllers will feature haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and finger touch detection. They will be rounder, which should make them more comfortable to play at other times.
headset
The headset itself is clearly the biggest thing to think about on the PS VR2! The new one has undergone some design changes. The headset is now closer to the PS5, matching very closely.
The headset is going to be white, with a shape that is reminiscent of that console. For anyone expecting Sony to go back to the black, this might be a little disappointing!
The headset is going to feature the same adjustable areas to fit different sized heads just like the original headset. There are going to be more gaps and fans to increase ventilation. Fog was a frequent issue with the PS VR, so it’s a nice change.
Another major innovation this time around is that the headset is only going to be one wire. This is a massive improvement. The original PS VR had a complete box set-up that requires multiple HDMI and other cables to come out of your PS4. It all went into a separate box for the headset, headset and TV. If you use your PS VR regularly, it has made the entire area around PlayStation look like a spaghetti junction. This is a good quality of life improvement here.
PS VR2 Games
The original PS VR may have had some major flaws, but it also had some fun games. The titles of Astro Bot really showed what it can do. In the long run, a lot of fans were a little disappointed with the support for the headset they received from Sony. Can we expect any better support for VR 2?
It looks like there are going to be some special games coming to the console in its early days. Hopefully, some of this proves to be as killer app as Astro Bot was for PS VR. VR 2 will also take advantage of the increased number of cross-platform VR games now available, with loads of games already featuring VR components for other headsets.
Resident Evil’s VR titles were a major highlight for the first headset. They will return for the new platform. New Resident Evil games will have VR version support, as mentioned in June’s State of Play. These are the games announced so far for PS VR2:
- among us
- sky
- mountain skyline call
- jurassic park game
- low-fi
- no man’s sky
- resident evil 4 remake
- Resident Evil Village
- Runner
- Samurai Slaughter House
- Sim Kayak VR Mirage
- the walking dead
The PSVR 2 is set to be a major improvement over the original. It also has some major quality of life improvements like better specs, brand new features like feedback, and even ditching the complicated cable set-up. However, we still have a little time before the launch date. As the time comes to a close, we’ll find out more about some of the exclusive launch games coming to the platform.
