If you like horror, VR, and puzzle rooms, the new trailer for Do Not Open, featured on the futuristic game show Powered by Mana, is probably worth a peek or two between your fingers.
VR horror can be intense at the best of times and being trapped in a spooky house with a wall-crawling demon baby to freak you out isn’t the best start to anyone’s day. There is also a giant skeleton witch creature… thing, there is a possibility of bursting through the door and you will be finished if you don’t hide in time too. So it’s not looking good for Slowpoke.
What’s really interesting about Do Not Open’s brand of VR horror, though, is its procedurally generated puzzle. It’s all based on the puzzle room concept of being trapped in a space, and uncovering and investigating the clues you need to get out. However, the house you’re trying to leave will change its layout, the location of the room puzzles, and items each time you play, creating more than 2,193, 360 different puzzle combinations. Every time you risk a game it will be a new challenge to test your skills.
Whatever the house gives you, you have to think fast because you’re up against the clock on who’s trying to escape – there are combinations to find, objects to locate and use, and puzzles to work with. Huh. Fail to leave the room before the timer runs out and things will get worse fast – as the game itself says “Solve, Hide, or Die”… the story behind it all is you as a character named Michael. , who is trapped inside a distorted and ambiguous version of her home, trying to survive, get out and save her family.
Do Not Open has already won awards, taking the Best Game spot in the Tech/XR category of the Indie Games Malaga Awards. You’ll be able to see why the game is coming to PS4/PS5 and PSVR soon. Follow developer Nox Noctis on Twitter (opens in new tab) to know more.
