Disney has maintained its success throughout the years with its various movies, TV shows, games, and other projects. Now with the upcoming launch of Disney Dreamlight Valley, the company once again proves its worth to fans as they explore magical worlds with all their favorite characters, like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and others they meet along the way.
Like many others, I’ve been a fan of the media conglomerate since childhood and have continued to air their many installments, including Disney’s Dreamlight Valley. But, even if you’re not a longtime fan of the universe, the game provides details on just about any story you might not be familiar with by allowing you to ask questions to characters.
My initial impression of the gameplay was that it reminded me of Minecraft’s construction mechanics because of its crafting components. At the same time, there were also elements of Kingdom Hearts due to the game’s continued adventures with Disney characters. But, of course, this installment is still its own unit, by hiding easter eggs to capitalize on nostalgia and allow players to embark on a number of exciting tasks.

The story begins when you leave the city life and move to a place you frequented as a child, but everything changes when you fall asleep and wake up in the realm of Dreamlight Valley. However, instead of the happy-go-lucky world we’re used to, darkness has engulfed the area ever since a mysterious ruler left it in a dilapidated state, which is a refreshing take on classic tales from which We are all familiar.
As a player, you have to customize your character to your liking and collect more Disney related clothes to make the experience more rewarding. Then, you’ll meet Merlin, who acts as a guide along your journey by assigning you missions that could improve the status of the ever-so-magical realm. During this time, he tells you about The Forgetting, an event that causes Disney characters to forget everything, resulting in some of them leaving Dreamlight Valley.
This is where your character plays as the protagonist who can restore the place to its former glory, where you must use your newfound powers to get rid of the thorns of the night. When I first started playing the game, I spent a lot of time moving around the map and eliminating this threat because it’s satisfying to clear the area, making more room for other landmarks. Plus, this process gives you resources like seeds and coins that can come in handy when you need a specific material or want to purchase a building improvement project from Scrooge McDuck.
When you vacate the land, you will also be given a house that you can customize as much as you want and stuff in a storage box. What I enjoyed most about this aspect is a small radio that plays popular Disney songs, like musical compositions from Wall-E, Moana, and Frozen.
In addition to the main currency of coins, you’ll also have to collect Dreamlight, a powerful source that can destroy large groups of night thorns. These resources are essential for blocky areas that can take you to new areas with more beloved Disney characters. From then on, it is up to the player to decide on the objectives and build relationships with their neighbors.
In this preview, I explore the vibrant region of Moana after getting enough Dreamlight. Moana and Maui have characters in this special world, as they look to you for help on the island’s sandy beaches. You’ll explore different areas and take part in a number of tasks that may result in one of them returning with you to Dreamlight Valley.

Each interaction with the characters gives us a chance to look deeper into their universes and hear familiar stories within their films. Plus, Disney Dreamlight Valley’s soundtrack is enjoyable to listen to while the game is playing, and you can’t help but sing along to the familiar bops from your favorite movies.
After playing a few mini-games and delving into the friendship, I look forward to seeing how the game will showcase the other characters we know and love. When it’s officially released, there will undoubtedly be more storylines and varied gameplay, which may include additional content to expand to different regions. Overall, the story and characters make it an excellent game for Disney lovers and may inspire future newcomers to the franchise.
