When Darkest Dungeon 2 (opens in a new tab) launched in early access on the Epic Games Store in October 2021, it shared a very large part of the campaign: it was packed with enemies and equipment, and you couldn’t find yourself in The Mountain. But an endpoint could be reached. , Defeat the boss contained at the end of the first task of the game.
What he didn’t have, however, was a progression system. But that’s all about to change thanks to a major update that has brought Altar of Hope (opens in new tab), a permanent base similar to Hamlet in Darkest Dungeon where players can unlock classes, items, and other upgrades.
The new progression system will give players Candles of Hope to complete objectives, progress through regions, and defeat evil, which can be used to obtain various upgrades that will (hopefully) enhance your future journey. Will make more live and profitable. Naturally, daring actions will earn the biggest rewards, but if you push your luck too far, you’ll be penalized for it: you can end your current campaign at any of the taverns and have earned up to that point. Can keep all the candles gone, but if you press and wipe, there will be a fine. “It’s always better to make it to the next inn,” said developer Red Hook Studios.
The only exception to that rule is for players who make it to the mountain, home of the current final boss of Darkest Dungeon 2: Even if you ultimately fail in your quest, you’ll keep all the candles you earned.
Candles of Hope is a currency that can be spent on the altar of Hope, which players will see at the start of each journey to improve attributes in one of four categories:

Belongings

Memories

The last category differs from the first three because it is not permanent: memories are powerful but only last for the life of that specific hero. Those lives aren’t always particularly long, but heroes who can stick around during the showdown with the final boss will keep their memories, making them even more powerful.
“While their mastery level will reset, surviving heroes will also keep their hero path, quirks and names,” Red Hook explained. “In addition, heroes who survive the final boss battle may now have an additional memory invested. These attributes will persist until the hero’s death.”
The Altar of Hope gives players another advantage in their fight against creeping evil: as the candles are inserted into it, the kingdom’s view will gradually become the same as before. Not very practical, perhaps, but a nice touch.
The Altar of Hope update is live today on the Darkest Dungeon 2 Experimental branch on the Epic Games Store, so you’ll need to join in if you want to see it. Red Hook Studios warned that the update is “a wholesale reworking of the fundamental premise of Darkest Dungeon 2’s metagame and progression,” and that all existing Hope scores will be reset, meaning that unlocked items and heroes, no more Pragati Abhiyan too, will be wiped out.
If you’re not ready to get into all of that right now, you have a little time to wrap things up, as Red Hook expects the update to go live on Darkest Dungeon 2’s main branch in a week Will go or two.
The update also introduced the new Bounty Hunter (opens in new tab), a return character from the first game, and other heroes, monsters, and several changes to the gameplay. Full details are available on Darkestdungeon.com (Opens in new tab).
