
The anime adaptation of Baku Yumemakura’s Onmauji novel series was announced at the Netflix Tudem Japan event on Sunday, revealing the main staff, a concept art (pictured above), and a character scene for Abe no Semei (pictured right). . The anime series will debut on Netflix worldwide in 2023.
Soubi Yamamoto (Meganebu!) is directing the anime in Marvy Jack. Natsu Hashimoto (Oshite Hokusai! The Animation) and Yuiko Katou (Agu: Tensai Ningyu) are writing the script.
Yumemakura originally began writing historical fantasy novels as a series of short stories in the September 1986 issue of All Yomimono magazine. Bunjishunju published the stories in tankbon and bunkoban formats in August 1998 and February 1991, respectively. Yumemakura also wrote novel-length stories, which were released in March 2000 by Asahi Shimbun in Tankbon and by Banjishunjuu in July 2003 in Bankban. The latter also shipped a two-part novel in September 2005.
Comic Burger began serializing a manga adaptation by Reiko Okano in May 1993, before switching to Comic Burger in May 1996. Numbering moved to Monthly Melody in June 1999, where it ended in May 2005. Scola originally released eight volumes from July 1994 to December 1998. Hakusensha republished the manga in 13 volumes between July 1999 and September 2005.
Okano drew the Onmouji: Tamatebako Sequel manga in Monthly Melody from December 2010 to April 2017. Hakusensha published the seventh and final volume in July 2017.

Onmauji tells the story of the famous Onmauji Abe no Semi, who meets and befriends the bumbling court great Minamoto no Hiromasa. Together, they protect Heian-Capital Q from an antagonistic Omanouji, Dawsan, who is secretly plotting the Emperor’s demise.
